5 Semi-Uncommon Condiments That You Should Have
Ok, I have no qualms with my beloved Heinz Ketchup, some Tobasco or some Lea and Perrins but there are other condiments out there that aren't appreciated. They may be a little harder to find but still easily available if you look for them. All these choices are cheap and a must have in my fridge. Read more for the breakdown with a special guest contributor and feel free to add any to the list.
El Yucateco Salsa Picante
I first found out about this one in a bodega years ago and it has become my favorite hot sauce. Thick, Smokey, Spicey Habanero flavor that isn't made for people that cant take heat. I recently put my mom onto this one and she is hooked. The red is tamer than the green but still hot. Can be found in any Latin market and some supermarkets.
Koon Chun Hoisin Sauce
It's deemed as Chinese fish sauce but it doesn't taste anything like fish. I would describe it as a salty Asian BBQ sauce. It can work as a glaze on meat and poultry or as a dipping sauce for dumplings. I recently marinated some chicken in it and tossed it on the grill for a BBQ. This can be found at any Asian specialty food store, DON'T buy the stuff they have at your local supermarket, it is not the real stuff.
Created in 1921 in Jamaica and known as "Jamaican Ketchup". Similar to A1 sauce but way better. Its prepared with cane vinegar and aged in oak barrels and Goes great on meat or poultry or as a flavoring agent to a dish. First time I had it was in Florida as a kid, my Grandfather fell in love with it and asked every restaurant we went to afterward if they had it (unfortunately they didn't) This one can be found quite easily in a proper supermarket.
Kosciusko Spicy Brown Mustard -
Maybe its the Polish in me but this should take Guldens crown as the top utility mustard. It taste like Guldens sexier Eastern European cousin and not to hard to find. You can put this on anything from a classic sandwich to a hot dog or Sausage. I have even used this to make a vinaigarette for a salad. You should be able to find this one quite easily in your supermarket but no-one ever buys it. Trust me, give it a shot
Known as "Brown Sauce" HP is the king (or queen) of condiments in The UK. Its malt vinegar based, blended with tomato, dates, tamarind extract, sweetener and spices. This is a mix of a steak sauce and ketchup that is quite good. This can be used with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Its gonna be a little hard to find this one, English specialty food stores will have it and well stocked markets like Fairway will also. You can also order it.
